Slawsa: the totally slawesome vegan gourmet topping!

When Slawsa offered to send us some of their “gourmet topping for everything” for review, mine was the first hand to go up; I love condiments!

Slawsa comes in four flavors: original, spicy, garlic, and spicy garlic. Much to my delight, the company sent me the original and spicy flavors. According to the site, Slawsa is “a cabbage-based relish with a salsa twist.” Naturally, this East Coaster decided to first try it out on a hot dog. I tried original on one half and spicy on the other. I was hooked from the first bite. While I didn’t discern any spice differential between the two, I should note that my tastebuds were burned off some time in the late ’90s when I first discovered hot sauce.

While I know that there are many recipe possibilities (be aware that those on their website are not all vegan), right out of the jar, Slawsa is an exemplary product for condiment lovers. It’s fair to say that I won’t be eating a Slawsa-less hot dog anytime soon. There is just something about this perfectly sweet and tangy topping that deftly replaces any other fancy mustard-and-relish combination you might consider applying to your frank.

imageAfter multiple dogs had been consumed in the name of research (it’s not my fault there are six in a pack), I also enjoyed Slawsa on a burger, again with ketchup accompaniment, to glorious result.

Because it was just sitting there in the fridge waiting to be eaten, I tried the salsa-hybrid on tortilla chips—that’s the spicy on the left and original on the right. It was okay, but a condiment of this caliber needed a better pairing.

imageAnd then it hit me. When I found myself with a takeout samosa and no obligatory tamarind chutney, I subbed Slawsa. Ermagherd, you guys.

imageNeedless to say, there are a world of opportunities for Slawsa, limited only by your imagination.

Slawsa creator Julie was kind enough to include a personal note in the testing package: “We embrace our uniqueness. I hope you do too. Be Slawesome.” This would be my new motto if it weren’t already taken.
