Meet our Herbie of the Week: Mickey!
Before switching to a plant-based diet, Mickey was a sick and overweight vegetarian, weighing her heaviest at 222 lbs.
Since becoming plant proud 3 years ago, Mickey has lost 75lbs, sleeps better, and her energy is through the roof. More importantly: she loves herself!
Here’s Mickey’s story in her own words…
I never thought I would ever share “my story”, only because in the beginning, I didn’t have the self confidence I have now. If my story could maybe help one person to go plant-based, I am in. 🙂
My story begins in February of 2013. I was at my heaviest weight of 222. I was one of those people who never had to worry about my weight until I had children. Then that was all I did, beat myself up for being fat. It was a terrible cycle. I was surfing the internet and found Dr. McDougall’s website and read all about his book, “The Starch Solution“. I bought it the next day, and switched my diet overnight.
My transition into plant-based diet for me wasn’t that difficult. Since my husband and two grown children were still eating the SAD diet, I decided that I wasn’t going to cook for them, so that took a lot of pressure off and I could concentrate on me.
I was a vegetarian for about 5 years before, but I was a sick overweight veggie. I didn’t give up dairy or oil, but when I started “McDougall-ing”, it worked. Shortly after that, I found the Happy Herbivore cookbooks. It was eye-opening. All the recipes were for just a couple servings or so, so I really learned how to cook plant-based.
I began to feel better and better, and after about 8 months or so, I wanted to start moving, so I started walking. But I’ve got to tell ya people, it is about the food. I lost most of my weight before I started exercising. Now I walk a lot. I have a great support system of friends who also love to walk.
As of August 2015, I am down 75 pounds and only have 21 pounds to go to reach my ultimate goal! My sleep has also improved, my hair’s growing thicker, my skin and nails improved, and my energy is amazing! It is never to late to decide to love yourself.
Thank you so much Mickey for sharing your journey with us!
