And the UK’s Most Vegan-Friendly City Award Goes to … Edinburgh!

This year, we’ve named Edinburgh the UK’s Most Vegan-Friendly City, and with more than 20 vegan-friendly restaurants, it’s easy to see why.

To celebrate, PETA presented the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, the Right Honourable Donald Wilson, with a replica of Edinburgh Castle made entirely out of vegetables!

Edinburgh Vegan Award

Discussing the title, the Lord Provost said:

Edinburgh has [many things] to be proud of, and our array of fantastic restaurants is certainly one of them. The city’s food scene has been recognised with Michelin stars for being Fair Trade and for having a social conscience – but this is our first prize for being vegan-friendly. I am delighted to accept this award from PETA and am thoroughly impressed with their unique and healthy interpretation of Edinburgh Castle!

Edinburgh takes the UK’s Most Vegan-Friendly City accolade from its occasional rival, Glasgow, which PETA recognised in 2013. Vegan eating is on the rise in Scotland, which is good news for Scots since, along with preventing animal suffering, vegan eaters are less likely to suffer from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer and obesity than meat-eaters are.

Edinburgh is home to an increasing array of vegan fare, including dishes from popular eateries such as The Auld Hoose and Henderson’s, which offer everything from traditional haggis – served with a cruelty-free twist – to salads, veggie burgers and warming soups.

Other eateries with standout vegan options include Take It Away Spud, a baked “tattie” shop with a tasty vegan Bolognese sauce; La Favorita Delivered, a family-run Italian restaurant ready to deliver a pizza topped with vegan mozzarella; and David Bann, which serves up a selection of animal-free meals in a high-end atmosphere. Eating the flesh, milk and eggs of animals is something that all of us can live without. With so many delicious plant-based options available, it’s never been easier for Scots to cut animal-derived foods out of their diets. For recipes, tips and advice, order your free vegan starter kit today.
