Animal News You Can Use: frothing at the mouth

Posted on:

Though the meat industry’s frothing at the mouth over our Massachusetts ballot measure aimed at preventing the sale of products from caged animals, one Boston Globe columnist takes a different view than the pork lobby’s, writing today that he sees the ballot measure as a way to help move our culture out of a “medieval mentality” with regard to animals.

Another way to move into the 21st century could be what Memphis Meats is doing. Fortune magazine reports this week on how one of the hottest food start-ups is (not) killing it.

Speaking of food, ever wonder what HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle eats? The New Haven Register’s got the deets!

If you don’t know Food Empowerment Project, well shame on you because you obvi don’t read Vegansaurus enough! We are big fans of their mission:

Food Empowerment Project seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. We encourage healthy food choices that reflect a more compassionate society by spotlighting the abuse of animals on farms, the depletion of natural resources, unfair working conditions for produce workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in low-income areas.

So come out, come out, Bay Area! Have some fun and support a great cause!

Animal News You Can Use: All we do is win win win

Posted on:

You know the animal movement’s winning when major meat companies are now producing plant-based meats and advertising them in meat industry trade publications.

You know the animal movement’s winning when, on the same day, a Washington Post columnist touts our success while a New York Times columnist condemns the chicken industry’s rampant cruelty.

You know the animal movement’s winning when the right-wing National Review runs a column on why animal protection is a conservative issue, and the New York Review of Books runs a must-read Peter Singer review of Wayne Pacelle’s new book.

You know the animal movement’s winning when schools across the country are signing up for HSUS’s plant-based culinary trainings.

And you know the animal movement’s winning when all this, my friend, happens in just one week.

Vegan Game of Thrones fans, get your chocolate dragon eggs!

Posted on:

Apparently the people at vegan chocolate company Coracao Confections are BIG Game of Thrones fans, because they made you vegan dragon eggs! AND they are free when you spend $75 on their site! But they are $12.95 otherwise so go ahead and just buy those if you want.

There are three total and each is a diff flavor:

Ice: Silky smooth chocolate filling infused with cool peppermint.
Earth: Creamy almond butter filling with lots of maca.
Fire: Chocolate fudge with fiery cayenne, paprika and sweet calabrian chiles.

THE EARTH ONE BLEW MY MIND! I love the cinnamon with almond butter combo, it’s so good.

OH AND! Do you fancy that big vegan chocolate dragon egg up there??? Well imagine him in your tummy because if you spend the $75 on their site (I recommend the Rawmond Butter Bar), not only do you get to add the dragon eggs for free, you are entered to win one of three of these GIANT chocolate dragon eggs.

Deets:

The dragon is hand painted with organic beet & turmeric and made with our signature 81{ae720e0b436026f867bfa0c31185c2252a138f27e85f5f152ec5acc1c10a8cc9} dark chocolate, fairly sourced from Ecuador.

When you checkout with $75 or more in your cart (before shipping) you’ll be able to add the dragon egg 3-Pack to your cart for free and will be automatically entered to win the giant dragon & egg.

Ok G.O.T. fans, have at it! Cut off is April 24th!

6 Vegan Makeup Products We Swear By

Posted on:

I mentioned in a post that I have vegan eyeliner I love (see #2) and someone asked what it was. I thought maybe I should just take a little time out to share all my fave products with you guys! I mean, someone should benefit from my makeup binges besides my credit card company. There are plenty of great vegan makeup options out there that I don’t mention in this post–this is just the stuff I wear on a regular basis. Let me know if you have any other beauty-product related questions, I kind of have a wealth of knowledge in this department but I don’t know if it’s of interest or not.

Without further ado, here’s my favorite vegan makeup!

image

1. Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick
This lipstick stays on like ALL day. Even after I eat. It has a subtle vanilla scent and never make my lips dry. My favorite color is Countess, a bright orange-based red. My second fave color is the hot pink “Sexer.” Idk what a sexer is but it’s a pretty color ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2. Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
This shiz is my JAM. It’s not super black any more by the end of the day but it’s still there and best of all, it never ends up in my eyelid crease like other eyeliners I’ve used.

3. Tarte Colored Clay Tinted Brow Gel
It’s basically decade of the brow. If you want a little more definition without drawing them on, I really like this tinted brow gel from Tarte. It’s just very subtle and easy to use but gives you a nice manicured look.

4. Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek
Milk is a new line to the makeup scene and a good deal of their products are vegan. I’m loving this creamy lip and cheek color! It just blends in really easily. I’m also into the Eye Vinyl but it feels a bit sticky and the effect doesn’t last that long…still pretty for a bit though!

5. Blinc Mascara
I’m not sure about Amplified (my sister’s favorite) and their other mascaras, but Blinc says their straight up “mascara” is vegan. This is what I wear every day. It’s a tubing mascara, so it only comes off with a little warm water and a rub from your fingers. I won’t wear non-tubing mascara any more (besides #6 below, which isn’t tubing but isn’t standard mascara either) because after like 2 hours it all ends up under my eyes. I don’t need to look any more hungover than I usually am, thank you very much!

6. Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Double-Ended Mascara and Lash Fibers
Idk why this has low ratings on Sephora cause this shiz is the jam. I don’t wear it every day because it’s a two step process and I’m SO LAZY. But for special occasions, I’ll break this out and let my lustrous lashes fly!

So that’s it for my go-tos. If I’ve gotten any info wrong and something on here isn’t vegan, let me know! It can be hard to keep up.
