Animal News You Can Use: did you hear that?

Posted on:

Did you hear that? It was the sound of the coffin shutting on the battery cage last week, with mega grocers Kroger and Albertson’s (the country’s #1 and #2 largest traditional grocery chain operators) announcing policies to go 100{ae720e0b436026f867bfa0c31185c2252a138f27e85f5f152ec5acc1c10a8cc9} cage-free. And they weren’t alone: Delhaize—which owns the Food Lion and Hannaford grocery chains—also announced a cage-free policy, as did egg producer JS West.

You’ll never guess what Texas’ former ag commissioner said about ag-gag bills. Read all about it in a new piece of mine on Huffington Post last week.

Also last week, the Miami Herald covered HSUS’s Food Forward events, which help schools cut their meat use; and Syracuse Woman Magazine profiled Stefanie Heath, one of the leaders of HSUS’s meat reduction efforts.

Not sure how to stick to your own personal meat reduction plan? HSUS’s Kristie Middleton offers some thoughts in a new Napa Valley Register op-ed.

Finally, last week, the president of HSUS released his recent interview with the president of the United States. Seriously. Check out Wayne’s interview with President Obama, in which POTUS calls wildlife extinction “an unpardonable loss for humanity.”

Hello, my pals! Time to look inside last month’s Vegan Cuts…

Hello, my pals! Time to look inside last month’s Vegan Cuts Beauty Box!

Let’s see. What do we have here? My fave thing was the Jojoba Company cleansing balm. Love some good jojoba! Def will be ordering more products from them.

I also liked the Wabi-Sabi facial cleanser/mask/scrub. I just looked up wabi sabi and found the best definition ever: Wabi-sabi (侘寂) represents Japanese aesthetics and world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. How great is that?! Hint: so great.

Other fun stuff: Aubrey Organics moisturizer, Earthlab Cosmetics mascara, and Leshea Butter Whips! As per usual, a good haul!

I got this for free but if you want to try it, the box subscription is $19.95 a month, shipping included (for US addresses. International is more).

Paulie Gee: Brooklyn’s Vegan Pizza God

If you live in Brooklyn, or even just visited, and you’ve never been to Paulie Gee’s…you sir have done yourself a disservice! This is an omni restaurant, but Paulie Gee has made sure there is an extensive vegan menu and it’s all DELICIOUS. When Laura visited in September, YOU KNOW I made her go there (pro tip: show up as soon as they open to avoid a two hour wait). We got this very pizza you see above: The In Ricotta Da Vegan (as well as every other veeg pizza on the menu, naturally). It’s my fave. It has THE BEST homemade vegan ricotta–which is hard to find–and yummy vegan sausage too. It’s just the best. That’s why I was so excited to see this video from Lost Vegetarian:

Lost Veg caught up with Paulie Gee and watched as the master worked! As you can see, the pizza isn’t just great, Paulie Gee is great. He’s the nicest. He almost always comes to your table to say hi! And he totally recognizes me when I go even though I only go like once a year. I don’t know how he does it–except that the genius behind this awesome veeg ricotta has got to be magic!

So if you haven’t been, get on that! You are a human! You deserve to LIVE!

PS: there’s even a vegan dessert pizza! Marmalade with vegan ricotta!!!
